Walker, Cane, or Rollator: A Caregiver-First Decision Guide

Walker, cane, or rollator

The decision is mostly about how steady the person is and how far they're walking.

Equipment prescribed for a NY claim?

Send the referral and the Brooklyn desk reviews it the next business day during business hours. Prescription required.

Cane

Steady person. Indoor + short outdoor. Cane is the lightest tool. Single-tip for most; quad-tip for less stable.

Walker (no wheels)

Person needs to lean. Indoor mostly. Picks up and moves with each step. Slow but very stable.

Rollator

Person needs to lean and walk further. Wheels on all four legs, hand brakes, often a seat. Best for the person who can walk a few blocks but needs to rest mid-trip.

Transport chair

The person can't safely walk the distance. Pushed by a caregiver. Folds for the cab. Lighter than a wheelchair.

When to escalate

Falls, near-falls, hesitation at the doorway, or an unsafe gait — bring in a physical therapist before buying. Insurance often covers the PT visit.
