An ice-free cold and compression therapy machine from NICE Recovery Systems for recovery after knee, shoulder, or hip surgery or injury. It circulates cooled water and air through a therapy wrap. When your treating provider prescribes it on a New York workers’ comp or no-fault claim, CityDME reviews the request case by case, and coding and coverage depend on the carrier.

The short answer
Can I get the NICE1 through workers’ comp or no-fault in New York?
Possibly, but not automatically. A prescription is required, and no New York fee schedule assigns this device its own code. For workers’ comp, expect a prior authorization: the DME fee schedule requires a PAR for E1399 and for items not on the schedule, and the Board-authorized prescribing provider submits it through OnBoard. Coverage depends on the carrier, and CityDME reviews each prescribed request case by case.

What it is
NICE1 circulates cooled water through a therapy wrap for cold, while air inflates the same wrap to compress around the body part. Unlike a traditional ice machine, it uses no ice, just water in the reservoir. NICE labels it Rx only, intended “for adults to treat post-surgical and acute injuries to reduce edema, swelling, and pain where cold and compression are indicated,” used by or on the order of a healthcare professional.
Ice-free cooling
The unit cools water in a 300 mL reservoir; NICE’s instruction is to add water, not ice.
Five cold levels
From 58°F at level 1 down to 42°F at level 5.
Static or dynamic compression
Low 13, medium 26, or high 39 mmHg. The dynamic cycle inflates for two minutes, then eases to 5 mmHg for 30 seconds.
Timed sessions or presets
A manual session runs 5 to 40 minutes, or a preset program schedules several sessions.

NICE makes wraps for the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow, hand and wrist, lumbar, and cervical spine. Wraps are single-patient use.

How to get it through a New York claim
Your treating provider decides what’s medically necessary. CityDME checks the referral, bills the carrier directly, and delivers.
The treating provider prescribes it
A claim always needs a prescription, and it decides the exact model and size or side. Send it with the claim type (workers’ comp or no-fault) and any claim details you have.
We review the referral the next business day
CityDME checks the order and claim details for completeness and lets the sender know if a document is missing. For workers’ comp items that need prior authorization, the Board-authorized prescribing provider submits the PAR through OnBoard; DME suppliers cannot.
We coordinate delivery
Once documentation is complete, we schedule delivery. Coverage and any patient cost remain subject to the claim, the applicable fee schedule, and payer review.
Common questions
Which wrap comes with it?
The wrap is separate from the unit, and NICE makes wraps for different body areas and sizes. The prescription decides the body area; wraps are single-patient use.
Does it need prior authorization under workers’ comp?
Coding for this device should be confirmed with the carrier. NICE lists it under E1399 (miscellaneous DME) on its VA/DoD supply page, and the New York workers’ comp DME fee schedule marks E1399 items as requiring prior authorization, which the prescribing provider submits through OnBoard.
What do you need for a no-fault (car accident) claim?
The prescription, plus the claim number, carrier, accident date, and assignment-of-benefits paperwork so the no-fault carrier can be billed directly. If a document is missing from the referral, we let you know which one.
Which New York rules apply?
Equipment on a New York claim is billed under the workers’ compensation DME fee schedule, or the no-fault (Regulation 68) fee schedule for auto claims. A claim always needs a prescription, coverage depends on the claim and payer review, and for workers’ comp any prior authorization is provider-submitted through OnBoard.
