What it is
SmartStim is a wireless TENS unit. It snaps onto a butterfly-shaped treatment pad placed on the skin over the painful area, and a handheld remote with a screen sets the program and intensity. The FDA cleared it as a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator “for temporary relief of pain associated with sore and aching muscles in the shoulder, waist, back, neck, upper extremities (arm) and lower extremities (leg) due to strain from exercise or normal household work activities,” and “for symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable pain and relief of pain associated with osteoarthritis.”
Wireless, no lead wires
The unit clips straight onto the treatment pad, so there are no cables between the stimulator and the skin.
Handheld remote
A separate remote with a screen starts and stops treatment and changes the settings.

A claim always needs a prescription, and it decides the exact model and size or side. Send it with the claim type (workers’ comp or no-fault) and any claim details you have.
We review the referral the next business day
CityDME checks the order and claim details for completeness and lets the sender know if a document is missing. For workers’ comp items that need prior authorization, the Board-authorized prescribing provider submits the PAR through OnBoard; DME suppliers cannot.
We coordinate delivery

Common questions
Is SmartStim a TENS unit?
Yes. The FDA cleared it as a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) for pain relief. Smart Recovery Technologies also calls it a joint stimulation device, which is a marketing name rather than a separate FDA category.
Do I need a prescription for SmartStim?
Not to buy one. The FDA cleared SmartStim for over-the-counter use. To get it through a New York workers’ comp or no-fault claim, your treating provider still has to prescribe it.
Are replacement pads included?
One spare treatment pad comes in the box. Replacement pads (EPAD-H02) come five to a pack, which the maker says covers about three months of treatment. Where the prescription includes them, pads can be supplied under the same claim.
Does CityDME submit the workers’ comp prior authorization?
No. When an item requires prior authorization under New York workers’ comp, the Board-authorized prescribing provider submits the PAR through OnBoard. DME suppliers are not eligible to submit PARs, and CityDME does not submit them.
What do you need for a no-fault (car accident) claim?
The prescription, plus the claim number, carrier, accident date, and assignment-of-benefits paperwork so the no-fault carrier can be billed directly. If a document is missing from the referral, we let you know which one.
Which New York rules apply?
Equipment on a New York claim is billed under the workers’ compensation DME fee schedule, or the no-fault (Regulation 68) fee schedule for auto claims. A claim always needs a prescription, coverage depends on the claim and payer review, and for workers’ comp any prior authorization is provider-submitted through OnBoard.
